NASA's SkyFall mission is set to revolutionize our understanding of Mars by searching for frozen water in the planet's shallow subsurface layers. The standard antenna for the radar's frequency range would be too large, so the team turned to a Vivaldi antenna, a design inspired by the violin's curved lines. This antenna can send and receive signals across a wide band of frequencies, making it ideal for the mission's requirements.
The antenna's flexibility is crucial to its success. It must bend during landing without being crushed or knocked loose. To achieve this, engineers wrapped the antenna in polyester and Vectran, a material known for its durability and ability to cushion. This design allows the antenna to snap back into place after each landing, ensuring it remains functional throughout the mission.
To test the antenna's resilience, engineers subjected it to extreme conditions, simulating 200 Mars landings. The antenna endured temperature swings as extreme as those experienced on Mars, as well as repeated bending and flexing. Despite these rigorous tests, the antenna performed flawlessly, answering key technical questions and demonstrating its readiness for the challenges of the Martian environment.
However, the journey to Mars is not without further hurdles. The antenna must undergo additional testing, including vibration testing and a simulated Martian environment. It will also need to pass signal checks and outdoor trials at JPL's Mars Yard. Despite these remaining challenges, the successful development of the antenna marks a significant milestone in NASA's quest to explore the mysteries of Mars.
