Boxing's Fiery Comeback: Figueroa's Knockout Offer and the Global Stage
Brandon Figueroa's recent triumph over Nick Ball was more than just a career-reviving knockout; it sparked a wave of admiration and a unique opportunity.
Enter Turki Alalshikh, a prominent boxing financier, who not only congratulated Figueroa but also extended a grand invitation. This came right after Figueroa's dramatic 12th-round knockout, claiming the WBA 126lbs title in Ball's hometown of Liverpool, England.
Alalshikh's words on social media were bold: 'Congratulations to Brandon Figueroa for his bravery, winning the WBA featherweight title with a knockout in the champion's territory. We invite him to defend his title on September 12 in Riyadh, at our 'Mexico vs. the World' event, headlined by the legendary Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.'
This offer is intriguing, especially considering Figueroa's Mexican-American heritage, aligning with the event's theme. Figueroa, with a record of 27-2-1 (20 KOs), would step outside the US for the second time, a significant shift from his usual Texas and Las Vegas fights.
But here's where it gets controversial. Queensberry Promotions intervened, ensuring the mandatory WBA featherweight title fight took place in Ball's hometown, despite Figueroa's impressive lead on two cards. Judge Jean-Robert Laine's unexpected scoring raised eyebrows, but Figueroa sealed the deal with a knockout.
Figueroa, a former WBA 122lbs and WBC 126lbs champion, has primarily fought under the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) banner, which now collaborates with Alalshikh's Riyadh Season. The upcoming February 21 Mario Barrios-Ryan Garcia DAZN event is a testament to this partnership.
Figueroa's response to Alalshikh's offer remains unknown, and it's unclear if he's even aware of it. For now, he dreams of bringing a title fight to his hometown, a wish he expressed after the Ball fight.
The featherweight division boasts other champions: Bruce Carrington, IBF beltholder Angelo Leo, and WBO titlist Rafael Espinoza. Figueroa's ambition is clear: 'I want all of them. Let's unify.'
This story raises questions: Will Figueroa accept the Riyadh invitation? How will his hometown aspirations unfold? And what's your take on the controversial scoring by Judge Laine? Share your thoughts below!
