Interestingly, Detroit was reportedly the sole team willing to offer Bregman a contract exceeding four years last year, leading Petzold to speculate that the Tigers might be biding their time, waiting patiently to see how other teams respond before making their next move.
Bregman is not just attracting interest from the Tigers; he has also caught the attention of several other teams, including the Blue Jays, Cubs, Diamondbacks, and Red Sox. However, Petzold points out that neither Chicago nor Boston seems eager to commit to a long-term deal, which reflects a continuation of the trend from last winter. At that time, the Cubs had extended a four-year offer in the range of $115 million to $120 million, which included multiple opt-outs. Ultimately, Bregman signed a three-year agreement with the Red Sox valued at $120 million, featuring opt-out clauses after each of the first two seasons.
As Bregman approaches his 32nd birthday, his performance in 2025 saw him achieve a batting average of .273 with a .360 on-base percentage and .462 slugging, alongside 18 home runs across 495 plate appearances for Boston. As Petzold notes, there exists a scenario in which all of Bregman's other suitors either choose to hold steady or make alternative acquisitions, potentially positioning the Tigers as the frontrunners willing to extend a long-term offer. Depending on how events unfold, Bregman and his agent Scott Boras might explore shorter-term contracts with higher annual value, complete with opt-out clauses. It’s worth noting that Bregman did not finalize his deal with the Red Sox until mid-February last year, which suggests he may be inclined to wait for the right offer or possibly seek greater stability this time around, avoiding another drawn-out free agency period.
